GROCERY STORES & BUTCHERS:

Newport has a well-stocked grocery and two award-winning butchers to provide everything you may need for a pleasant stay at Lough Beltra Lodge. Sheridan's Centra has an in-house bakery, deli counter, a complete selection of fresh and frozen food – and an off license department with beer, wine and liquor. Keane's Meats is renowned for their dry-aged beef (be sure to ask Sean to hand-cut and trim some extra-thick steaks to grill on our Weber barbeque) and locally sourced lamb, and Kelly's Butchers offers a complete selection of fresh meats, award-winning sausages, gourmet foods and fine wines.

Farther afield, Westport's SuperValu sells locally caught fresh fish along with a huge selection of fresh produce and other groceries – plus a large wine and liquor department. And just south of Newport, you'll want to visit Croagh Patrick Seafoods (www.croaghpatrickseafoods.ie) to pick up a bag of fresh mussels or a box of oysters for dinner (we stock oyster knives in the kitchen). But, please call Padraic ahead of your visit!

DINING OUT: Newport offers gourmet dinners at the historic Newport House, upscale lunches and dinners at the Grainne Uaile Pub and Walsh’s Bridge Inn, and cafe dining and tea at Kelly's Kitchen, The Blue Bicycle Tearooms and the Riverside Cafe (on the Greenway just west of Newport off the N59). Chamber's new Riverbank Coffee Shop is located right below their Garden Centre on the Castlebar Road and serves fresh brewed coffee, teas and pastries with a dramatic view of the Newport River and the railroad viaduct.

Not far up the road to Mulranny is Nevin's Newfield Inn, with a full menu, an elegant pub and dining room -- and outdoor tables overlooking Clew Bay.

Of course, Westport is famous for their selection of eateries, from economical lunch spots to gourmet restaurants. Here are two links to a lot of what the town has to offer:

PUBS & ENTERTAINMENT

Ireland is famous for our pubs, and the west of Ireland has some of the very best. For a one-street town, Newport hosts no fewer than four: The Grainne Uaile, Walsh's Bridge Inn, Brannen's and Nevin's -- plus Nevin's Newfield Inn on the road to Mulranny. The Grainne Uaile is our home pub, and they put out picnic tables overlooking Newport's Harbour every summer, which are just about the finest places to sit and while away a sunny afternoon.

The Grainne Uaile offers traditional music on Thursday nights and Brannen's has a variety of music sessions on Friday nights. The others periodically offer musical entertainment, so check their Facebook pages during your stay.

It's no secret that Westport is a favorite destination for both Irish and visiting Europeans because of the wonderful shopping, food and entertainment. And it's certainly no secret that the high king of Westport's evening entertainment is Matt Malloy's pub in the centre of town, which presents a huge variety of evening performances and in-pub traditional sessions that are always in such demand that prior reservations are strongly recommended.

Here's a link to descriptions of many of the other pubs in Westport that offer musical entertainment (but, it doesn't include MJ Hoban's on the Octagon, which we highly recommend):

SHOPPING:

Newport has a variety of specialty shops including clothing at Corcoran's and Patricia's Fashions, footwear at Walsh's (the best place to buy a new pair of wellies should the weather turn wet and rainy), hardware and other dry goods at Futura Flooring, and gifts, stationery, party supplies and souvenirs at Aishling's variety store. We also have two hair salons, a barber shop and a laundry. Kelly's Circle K filling station and garage is a great spot to have a sandwich made by their deli department while you refuel (or repair) your car before a day out on the road.

Westport is a hugely popular shopping destination with upscale shops selling men's and women's wear, woolen goods, kitchen supplies, artwork, books, Irish-made crafts & gifts, work & leisure wear, jewelry and homewares. Their Thursday morning Country Market is a great place to buy local produce and baked goods.
